Digital Media in the Classroom

What is digital media?

What exactly is Digital Media?

Digital media is any media that are encoded in a machine-readable format.  Digital media can be created, viewed, distributed, modified and preserved on computers. Computer programs and software; digital video; web pages and websites, including social media; data and databases; digital audio, such as mp3s; and e-books are examples of digital media

How can we use digital media in the classroom to increase achievement?

Digital media may increase the engagement of lessons.  Creating a rigorous lesson and scaffolding it while using digital media may promote 21st century skills, increase college and career readiness, and demonstrate an excellence in technology.  When students are engaged, learning increases.   

1.)Instead of using whiteboards students may use their cell phone and text the correct answer.  Answers will automatically be calculated in front of the entire classroom.   The teacher will need to develop a structure for using cell phones in the classroom.  If some students do not have a cell phone then groups may share.   https://www.polleverywhere.com/my/polls

3.)This application allows teachers and/or students to create a presentation and use it in their teaching.  Teachers may use this to record and “Doodle” their lesson.  The program can save it and then from home while using a cell phone students may view the previously recorded lesson.

4.)The application   “symbaloo” will allow you to search for hundreds of aps that may be useful in increasing achievement. 

5.)The application, “LiveBinder” allows students and teachers to create a virtual binder. 

6.)This website allows you to brainstorm ideas with all students.  Students will write responses on the pad and automatically everyone in the class sees all of the responses.  http://padlet.com/

7.)The application “AnswerGarden”  is a social response ap for creative.  Pose a question to your students on a topic and the ap will combine the students responses in a word cloud based on popularity. 

8.)The application, “ThingLink” allows students to create books.  Students upload pictures and then type the text. 

9.)The application, “Bee-Bot” will allow students to become engineers. (Grades Kindergarten and higher). 

10.)The application “Tellagami”  allows students to tell a story.  Teachers may use this application to teach a lesson, have students create a book report, or make a presentation.  This may work well with the new listening and speaking component of the common core standards. 

11.) The application, “Subtext” supports teachers in their new Common Core instruction, and helps students move closer to college and career.  Teachers can embed instruction into the pages of any digital text.  Because notes are linked to a specific passage, there’s a natural emphasis on close reading, citing text evidence, and supporting claims. 

12.)The application, “Educreation” turn your IPAD into a recordable whiteboard. 

13.) The application, “BookCreator” allows students to create picture books. 

14.) The website http://code.org/  allows students to learn how to code. 

15.)The application “Gooru”  transforms the study experience.  Share any collections with your students and they can access your Gooru class.  Students may access their assignments or quizzes. 

16.) The application “Haiku Deck”  is a limited version of powerpoint for an IPAD. 

17.)The application “ClassDojo” is a behavior management system. 

18.) The application, “Sketch Cartoon”  allows you to turn ordinary pictures into works of art. 

19.)The application, “Popplet Lite” allows you to create your ideas and sort them visually in realtime.  Create a web of ideas. 

20.)The application, “Study Blue”  you can make, study, and share mobile flashcards, study guides and quizzes. 

21.)The application “Schoology” allows your class to work like a faacebook page.  Post videos, comments, about lectures etc.  Promote critical thinking etc. 

22.)The application “NearPod” allows for teachers to manage what everyone sees on their screens.  Students may follow along at the teacher’s pace with their IPADS or devices. 

23.)The application “Dunno” will allow you to type a topic about something, and you will retrieve relevant information about we pages, videos, Wikipedia, tweets, podcasts and more. 

24.)The application “Hangouts” is a messaging ap that let’s you send and receive messages, photos, and videos and even start free video calls.

26.)The application “Groupme”  is the best way to chat with everyone using any device.

28.)The application, “STAR Tracker” allows you to find constellations in the night sky.

31.) Chatterpix allows you to take a picture with an IPAD.  Record where you want the mouth at then it will record the students' voices.

Footsteps to Brilliance App (Not Free)

Students arrive to school already with an achievement gap.  A school district in northern California uses this application to increase literacy.  They found a way for parents to purchase a device with a rent-to-own program at the school.  Parents pay $30 up front and then $15 per month to purchase a device.  The school has parent nights to show how to use the program at home.  Parents even learn ENglish themselves from helping their children.  Contact Eileen@footstepstobrilliance.com  for more information about Footsteps to Brilliance

If each student has a device during the lesson, they no longer have to raise their hand.  They simply write their question during the lesson and other students or the teacher can respond to the question without interrupting the flow of the lesson.  This questions are anonymous as each student can create a screen name.

Google Forms
  • On the Freeman webpage there is a link that says “Google Apps.”  Students may not access this link.  If a teacher creates a Google Form (In GoogleDocs click on “Create” and then click on “Forms.”  After you teach a lesson create a 5 question quiz.  You will receive a pie chart of the class average without you having to correct.
Also create a quiz but insert page breaks between each question.  After the students submit the response to the first question have the answer written before question 2 just above the 2nd question.  This will provide students with instant feedback to see if they received the correct answer.
